Below are some selected examples of my work... the ones I’m allowed to share, anyway. A lot of my best work has been produced internally for other companies; though I can’t show that here, you can see what these companies have to say about working with me.

Farmleigh Affair is a two day event with live performances, in Farmleigh in the Phoenix Park. The look of the site is based heavily on the great poster designs by Paul Gibney Design, and expands the visual system to better suit the web and include more content. The site also allows you to apply for tickets online, using code I previously developed for both the Salon Music Series and Farmleigh.

Van den Bergh Landscapes is a garden design company based in Bray. Along with the website itself, I designed a new logo for the company (ably assisted by John Ryan of Life Forms Design) and repurposed SlideShowPro Director, with a dash of custom PHP programming, to act as a content management system for listing projects with a dynamic slideshow of images.

The Village Centre Saggart is a mix of commercial, residential and office properties set in a new village centre in Saggart, Co. Kildare. I designed and structured the site so that related information was clearly grouped and easy to find, and also wrote a lot of the text.

The Glasthule Opera had its first performance in June 2008, I was commissioned to create a website to support this. For the best effect, given the tight budget, I chose to focus on the typography; keeping the tone formal and elegant. The blue “thank you” box was added later.

What this company does should be pretty clear: they sell shower doors. Along with the visual design, I was also responsible for creating a custom shopping cart system in Rails, which integrates with RealEx for payment processing.

I was contracted by iQ Content to create visual designs for the Rules of the Road site. These designs were completed quickly and fit in with existing Rules of the Road material (such as the handbook).

I’m a member of MCC, and joined the web team as the designer. The site runs on TextPattern, and is updated regularly with news, event information and sermons. In 2008 it won the General Assembly of the PCI Communications award; and is currently being redesigned to better suit our needs.

Frank Flanagan Fittings is a furniture fittings company with over thirty years experience in supplying to Irish manufacturers. I am quite happy with both how well the design of the site holds up over time, and with the custom-written javascript slideshow on the product section pages

As a contractor for Transware, I designed and structured the site way back in 2005, creating a new online style for them and custom icons and maps. I think it’s a testament to the quality of my work that the site has stayed essentially the same since it was created over three years ago.

Contrast is a web company based in Dublin, and is run by Eoghan McCabe. I’ve worked with Contrast on several websites, and also did some XHTML and CSS work on their exception tracking app, Exceptional to help them get it ready to demo at Railsconf 08.

David Barrett is a very talented designer and a committed professional. I've worked with him on a number projects and he has always worked hard to the end, delivering great results and continuously pleasing clients.
Contrast is dripping with talent. Eoghan in particular has a way with clients that I am rather envious of.
iQ Content is “a group of usability, accessibility and content experts dedicated to creating better websites for everyone”. Along with the Rules of the Road site, I have worked with iQ on designs for several websites (produced under NDA) and provided some javascript cover.

Dave has worked with us on a number of successful projects and brings far more to the table than just pretty pictures. Web standards, a keen eye for usability. He’s also innovative, has clever insight and uses a scientific rigour to solve difficult design problems.
From what I’ve seen, iQ Content are the best company in Ireland to handle large-scale web site projects from start to finish.
Zeraphina are a company that provide a wide range of web-related services. I worked as a contractor with Zeraphina from the summer of 2006 to the autumn of 2007, joining the web production teams on several high profile AOL projects (such as Search 7, AIM Pages) and lead the team that worked on Money & Finance.

Dave’s attention to detail was a serious boon for us on several projects. His well rounded experience and confident client-side manner meant we could put him in the field without worrying about casualties!
So deep is the culture of technical proficiency here, that the managers could probably code you under the table. It was a great place to work.
