Movie studio does the right thing?

An insert in the DVD case which thanked me for purchasing

After opening my copy of Day Watch this evening, I was pleasantly surprised to find something you really don’t see all that often… a thank you note.

In an industry increasingly forcing us through poor experiences to see a movie —condescending anti-piracy shorts (portraying psychic UIs I might add) and cinema staff in night-vision goggles looking for cameras — it’s really nice to be thanked for doing the right thing.

No need to go on so long, though!

What I find ironic is that the only time you see that stupid “You wouldn’t steal a handbag” video is on legal dvds. Imagine stopping every single person who walked into a shop and making them watch a 30 second video about how shoplifting is wrong before allowing them to enter?

You can imagine my disappointment when I went to play the DVD and was assaulted with that bullshit. At least it didn’t require me to select the language I was to be condescended through.

The weird thing is, those ads make stealing look fairly cool. Particular stealing handbags. Dress up in a suit and coat, put some heavy but non-offensive rock music on the iPod, and steal from some women. It’s the cool thing to do, apparently.
