The first article designs

Sorry for the lack of updates: I’ve been out of action for the last three weeks. But I’m going to shut up about that now, and get on to the latest abandoned concepts. This time it’s the very first designs for a long blog post or article, dating back from early 2005, believe it or not.

Here’s the first:

The paint stroke in the top left makes it’s first appearance, bluntly symbolising creativity. I very much hope that I have become somewhat more subtle.

At the time I had yet to decide on the shade of “black” or red used in the logo, so I used a grey that was far too light and a rather obnoxious red. The typeface used is Trajan, because clearly I’m less a designer and more like a movie.

This design is based around an eight column grid, to allow for flexibility while still being somewhat cohesive. I believe this is the first time I used a formal grid for a design. One thing it allowed me to do was to use two image widths that still “worked”. Here’s the same design with a wider image:

And just for the sake of experimentation, I decided to see what the colour scheme would look like as a light on dark design:
